Research

UC-Light is built upon diverse research expertise from four University of California campuses and a U.S. National Laboratory. The center combines research backgrounds in architecture, wireless communication, networking, lighting design, optics, control systems, devices and circuits. It aims to develop unique high-speed ubiquitous communication and navigation systems superimposed on LED lighting. Specifically, the following goals are anticipated: (1) to design, study and deliver realizable solutions to lighting design, distribution and control; (2) to build an architecture for wireless LED signaling and advanced optical communication and networking techniques; (3) to develop system-on-chip circuit integration; (4) to integrate positioning and indoor navigation with communication; and (5) to integrate these systems into architectural features of new construction and retrofits. All sub-systems then undergo joint optimization, coherent integration, prototyping and testing, and technology transition for various applications.
